Today we did a bunch of idioms. Here is the list:
learn the ropes - to understand how to do a particular job or activity
eg. It'll take some time for the new receptionist to learn the ropes.
out of place - not comfortable or suitable for a particular situation
eg. He is worried about his job and feels out of place in a large organization.
bring home to - to cause someone to realize something.
eg. My weakness was brought home to me by the heavy work I had been assigned to do.
rack one's brain(s) - to think long and hard
eg. I racked my brains for hours trying to recall her name.
a can of worms - a source of many unpredictable and complicated problems
eg.
over the moon - extremely pleased and happy The situtation he was into turned out to be a real can of worms. He just couldn't handle it.
eg. When he sent me the flowers and a note, I was over the moon.
be in two minds about - to be unable to decide about something
eg. Residents are of two minds about new traffic restrictions in the area.
call it a day - to stop doing something, especially working
eg. After playing together for 20 years the band have finally decided to call it a day.
